Diskology Adds FireWire Depot as a Disk Jockey Reseller

Lincoln, CA 3/3/2004 Diskology proudly announced today that FireWire Depot has signed up as a reseller of the Disk Jockey, the Swiss Army Knife of hard disk cloning, backup and diagnostic tools. FireWire Depot has been providing high-end products to the Macintosh and Windows marketplace since 1999 and features a vast lineup of 1394a and 1394b products.

FWB Software Becomes Diskology's Disk Jockey Reseller

Diskology To Help Users Upgrade Digital Video Recorders, Including TiVo® On the Mac

Lincoln, CA 1/5/2004 Diskology, manufacturers of the hard disk copy / backup / diagnostic tool the Disk Jockey, announced today the creation of a set of software tools designed to allow Macintosh and Windows users the ability to easily and quickly upgrade the internal hard disk drives in their digital video recorders (DVRs) including DVR’s taking advantage of the popular TiVo® subscription service. By upgrading the hard disk drives users can increase the amount of recording time with their DVRs by up to 6X. Diskology hopes to begin shipping the DVR upgrade tools in early February. The Disk Jockey will be on display at the Granite Digital booth (#2625 South Hall) at this week’s Macworld San Francisco Expo.
The software upgrade tools, in conjunction with the company’s flagship disk copy / backup / diagnostic tool the Disk Jockey, will allow DVR users to remove the smaller internal ATA hard disk drives from their DVR units and upgrade them to larger hard disk drives. The process, which is not endorsed by the DVR manufacturers, is done to increasing the recording time of the DVR, in some cases increasing recording time from 30 up to 180 hours of viewing time. The process does void the product warranty. Standard off-the-shelf ATA hard disk drives can be used in the upgrade.
DVR upgrades are currently being done through a series of software tools under Unix. Using this method, customers must insert hard disk drives inside of a PC, boot into Unix and run a series of software copy and expansion tools that can take hours to complete. Using the Disk Jockey and the Diskology DVR tools, the process can take minutes and can be accomplished remotely using a laptop computer connecting the Disk Jockey via either USB or Firewire.
“This is a huge step in making this process more customer friendly,” said Tony Overbay, CEO of Diskology. “We’re going to enable users to be able to upgrade DVRs in people’s homes, in less than half an hour and without the need to ever crack open a computer case. Plus, it will be available for both the Macintosh and Windows computer platforms. I envision every computer tech, consultant or hobbyist adding the ability to upgrade DVRs in customer’s homes as part of their services when these tools become available.”
